Whether you have inherited or handpicked your team, you should understand “what motivates them, their fears, ambitions, strengths, blind spots, areas to develop and expectations from you and your company”. To get to know your technical experts, she suggests: Profiling each person in your team, by using DISC personality profiling, Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument or taking a Clifton Strengths assessment. If you don’t have the budget to invest in these, you can do this more informally using Sharron’s suggested list of questions. Spending 1:1 time with them. Schedule 1:1 meetings in advance and use Sharron’s tips to carry out these valuable conversations. Configuring the best communication style and channels for your team. Be flexible in your communication modes and style, and adjust them to make open communication possible in all directions Knowing the people who report to you will give you credibility from your team and from people outside your team. You can plan workloads and schedules by knowing how to best connect with each person, the environment they like to work in and who best to call on to resolve a problem. You’ll also be able to set expectations of the team with internal customers, or your peers and leaders i.e. when you know the skills and strengths you don’t have, you can quickly advise to buy-in or build a skill that isn’t currently in the team.
